Self Care BIZ Tips for BIZ-Y People: A = Awareness

Are you WELL  AWARE about what is going on with your health?  Sure I know you are ultra busy doing your daily to-do list, running from meeting to meeting, dealing with interruptions, putting out fires, eating out alot at lunch meetings, not always able to make healthy food choices, managing all your emails and social media, working longer hours than is humanly possible, missing out on family time, exhausted, never getting enough sleep, super stressed out – WHEW!  How do you keep it all in perspective so you don’t overdo?  Or have you already overdone?  And yes – your health and your career could be in jeopardy!

It’s time for some perspective on how you are living your life.  It’s time for some AWARENESS so you don’t crash and burn.  Here are some tips:

A – Allow time for yourself

Put ME TIME on your calendar every day.  If it’s not on the calendar it won’t happen. Before I fill up my week I schedule time for Jazzercise 3-4 times per week and that makes it more likely it will happen.  You may have to block out time for breaks and a “lunch hour” – yes, we used to give ourselves an hour for lunch, not 10 minutes to gulp down some fast food! You can also schedule an appointment on your calendar with yourself to do whatever helps you regroup and relax for a bit.

W –Weigh your priorities

What exactly is your goal for the day and how much time do you actually need to accomplish it?  Write it down and block out your calendar at the beginning of the day so when all the other distractions occur, you can better manage them by saying NO or delegating or making time on your calendar.  There is nothing more stressful than not getting something done you need to do before you go home, and then you either go home late to get it done, or you take it home and work on it in the evening during your family time. Not a great idea.

A – Act “AS IF” your life is manageable

The great thing about your brain is it responds to what you are thinking.  That can be bad if you are thinking everything is out of control, you’re frustrated all the time, you constantly use negative language –  your body then decides to open the flood gates to release stress hormones into your system and set you up for headaches, gut aches, all kinds of aches.  On the other hand if you think life is good, business is manageable, work is joyful, and only positive words come out of your mouth all day,  your brain can also be tricked into opening the flood gates to release “feel good” hormones and then you feel good and don’t have stress-related ailments.  So if you act “AS IF” all is well, then you will be well.

R – Reconnect with your true self

Who are you really, and are you fully expressing your true self in your work and home life?  If you are not being true to yourself, your body isn’t happy and you are setting  yourself up for stress once more.  If you are managing your own business, you must have started out believing that this is what you were meant to be doing – it was your destiny.  If it hasn’t worked out that way, then either it wasn’t your destiny, or you need to do some tweeking so the business reflects positively on you and your efforts and you don’t collapse and burn in the process. Take a day off to do some reflective work on whether this business is right – and HEALTHY – for you.

E – Engage with relaxation

When you are relaxed, there is no room in your body for a busy mind, stress, anxiety or sleeplessness.  Your body is calm and at peace and in a free and healthy state.  It is what your body wants and your mind can help you achieve this.  Do 10 slow deep breaths whenever you feel the stress building to activate your parasympathetic nervous system which is designed to calm you down. You can do this anywhere! Schedule relaxation breaks throughout the day and use techniques like tapping, progressive muscle relaxation, visualization of a calming place, or get some fresh air while taking a relaxing walk outside. Relaxation helps you create true awareness of how you are doing at any given time.  And it feels great too!

N – Notice how you feel in the present moment

The present moment is all we have and yet we often don’t stop and do a quick check on how you are doing.  You can set the timer on your computer, phone or watch to ping you as a reminder that it’s time to check in with YOURSELF.  Then do a quick body scan from head to toe to see if you are experiencing any stress, muscle tension, or pain and do some slow deep breathing to release the angst.   Also note your mental state.  Are you feeling negative or positive?  If you are feeling negative, say positive things like – today is a great day, I love being here, my colleagues are so fun to be with – or write positive words like, joy, peace, happiness, love.  These techniques will shift your mental state from negativity to positivity, and once again, your body will respond with less stress hormones and more relaxation.

E – Enjoy your life

Life – Balance should be your mantra.  If stress is the order of the day at work, then relaxation should be the balancing factor when you go home at night.    We don’t always make a transition from work to home and often carry the stress home with us.  Instead, use the drive-time going home to play enjoyable music or no radio at all. Look for great sights to appreciate like nature, a cool car you admire, kids playing – notice things that bring you joy.  Get out of your work clothes when you get home and put on comfy stuff that helps you complete the process of letting go of work.  Try not to bring work home if at all possible.

S – Sleep more

Most of us are exhausted!  Too much work and not enough rest will do that every time.  Getting enough sleep is crucial for what you need the most in your business –  cognitive functioning, good decision making, managing stress hormones, preventing weight gain and gut health problems and preventing mistakes.  Placing a value on 7-8 hours of uninterrupted sleep is a challenge, but can be life-threatening if it doesn’t happen.  Add sleep to your priority list and schedule your bedtime and wake time so it has a place on your calendar.  After all, if it isn’t on the calendar it won’t happen.

S – Stay focused

A major challenge for any executive with multiple responsibilities and interruptions is to stay focused to accomplish what needs to be done. Keep as much structure in your day to stay on track.  When distractions occur, use triage thinking to minimize the impact.  Is it life threatening? Deal with it.  Can it wait? Schedule it into your calendar at your convenience.  Is it not appropriate for your attention?  Delegate it.

Hope these tips will create more awareness about how you can take back your life at work and at home.

No More Muttering About De-Cluttering

As you may recall from my last posting, I was deep into office clutter and the stress was killing me.  So having pledged to my business coach that I would amend my ways, I set up an alarm on my phone and went to work.  My goal?  Clean up my bookshelf so Annie the cat can sit on top of it with a clear view out the window without knocking over all my stuff.  A worthy goal, even if it’s about my cat having an nicer life!

So what have I learned from this experience?

You can avoid the clutter and stress out all you want, but nothing changes until you take action.

You can make a commitment to another person (like a coach) so you will have to keep your word.

You can do this efficiently and is less time by using the timer on your cell phone to keep you moving.

You can add energetic music to the process so if feels like fun.

You can trick yourself into feeling like you are having fun and you are the best organizer in the world!

And the best thing for me is admiring my work and even wanting to keep that shelf looking this way every day.  And now on to the next challenge – my desk!

It’s time to lighten your load and start living clutter free!

If you are CREATIVE  like me, clutter stays cluttered and causes muttering about the clutter and never gets resolved.

So what’s that all about?  My perception is that cluttering results from being blessed – or cursed – with being a person who is VISUAL.  You need to have everything in view so you can find it.  OUT OF SIGHT AND OUT OF MIND is your motto.  Can you relate?  So how do you manage that?

Let’s  apply this issue to a 12 Step Program of which I am very familiar and has helped me greatly in the past with issues out of my control.

  1. Admit you are powerless over clutter, its becoming a barrier to managing your life and business successfully and causes  you a great deal of unnecessary stress.
  2. Believe that a force greater than you can bring clutter under control if you just turn it over to the clutter gods for support.
  3. Make a commitment to getting regular cluttering done by committing it to your calendar.
  4. Search within yourself to discover why cluttering is happening in the first place and address that
  5. Admit to yourself and others that just because it appears to be a problem, it is actually related to what kind of person you are and reflects the nature of a creative mind
  6. Be willing to admit to yourself and others that just because you have the gift of creativity doesn’t mean you can’t control the clutter in your life.
  7. Ask the clutter gods of the universe to support your efforts in managing the clutter in a positive way.
  8. Make a list of all the people (include yourself) and projects you have disappointed because of not being more organized and efficient due to excess clutter
  9. Share those truths with those affected and make amends
  10. Continue to monitor your clutter daily and course correct promptly to avoid it paralyzing you
  11. Set your intention daily using visualization on what it looks and feels like to live a clutter-free lifestyle
  12. Share the message and lessons learned with others challenged by this issue.

Now you don’t have to do all of these steps right away.  This is a major lifestyle change and thrives on doing one step at a time and moving on when you start seeing and “feeling” results.

Begin living clutter free!

Network or Die!

Did you know that “people need people” and in some cases when people don’t have human contact they can die?  Newborns denied physical contact with other humans can actually die from this lack of contact, even when provided with proper nutrition and shelter.  Older people who lack social contacts may be at increased risk of death if acute symptoms develop, because there is less of a network of confidantes to prompt medical attention.

So how does this relate to my wellness business?  Here’s my take on the importance of networking with others.

There are times when I just don’t want to be around people and want to hole-up at home and not see anyone.  For me that is a sign that my wellness business is losing ground – and could be at “death’s door”.  After all, independent business owners who don’t get out there and meet people,  don’t have any customers.  And then what kind of business would I have?

Working for yourself  is certainly different  than having a job working for a boss and being around lots of people all day.  There are always opportunities to make connections,  be seen and known and create new opportunities.  But when you work for yourself,  it is up to you to make those connections happen.

I’m just giving you a reality check in case you are about to embark on starting a business of your own and want to find out how to grow your business and avoid the “kiss of death” that happens to 50% of new businesses.

NETWORKING rules as a business builder and here’s why:

N – new connections are made with new people who may need your services
E – enjoyment happens when you learn about people’s hopes and dreams
T – trust develops when you connect with people on a regular basis
W – wonderful conversations often lead to friendships
O – opportunities arise to find even more people whom you can serve
R – rewards come from being able to help someone improve their life
K – kindred spirits show up the more people you meet
I – intimate conversations can lead to deeper relationships
N – notice what happens  when you give the gift of listening to another person
G – great things occur when great people get together

So if you are going into business for yourself, networking with people on a regular basis is critical – but pays off with great rewards.  And it is fun “getting to know you”.  James Taylor will tell you all about it!

As I ended my career in the corporate world and branched out on my own,  I realized I still had more to offer and craved these 3 things.  I never saw myself retired so I knew I had to create a new path for myself that would still be fulfilling personally but would also allow me to continue making a difference in the health and wellness of others.  The path I chose fell into place because I was OPEN TO POSSIBILITIES  and was WILLING TO TAKE CALCULATED RISKS.

Introducing Work Without Walls

Recently I had the honor of working alongside my mentor, Dr. Karen Wolfe, who flew in from California to present wellness presentations to eager audiences in my town of La Crosse and then we drove 5 hours to Green Bay Wisconsin to do the same.

We were truly “road warriers” and I was reminded of how much more fun it is to do my work without walls, than it is to be confined – or shall I say – chained to a desk in an institution.

We were on the move at all times but were still working using our smart phones and stopping along the way to take a break and do some writing.  Notice Karen behind my car at a picnic table doing business while I start enjoying my “flurry”.  Now that’s what I call doing business!

We were in conversation the entire time planning, making decisions and sharing insights.  It was truly running our businesses “on the go” and it was fun and exhilarating.

Here are some of the comparisons I see between having a traditional job at a business (which I did most of my career), and my job now as a solo-entrepreneur.  You decide which brings more joy and fits you best!

Traditional Workplace

Confined to a desk in a room or a cube with no windows

Being disconnected from the outdoors and nature.

Phone and computer anchored to desk so after multiple meetings have to catch up returning calls and emails which is inefficient

Set work schedule of 8-12 hours so miss important events and activities that occur during work day

Power thru the day without a rest break

Boss dictates what I do and when I do it

 

Independent Work Without Walls

Many work spaces – home office, car, coffee shop, outside at a picnic table, sitting in an airplane, in a hotel room, at a restaurant

Outside whenever I want to re-energize, take walks, clear my head, restore creativity

Smart phone and lap top are always with me so I’m always connected and can respond immediately to requests

Flexible work schedule so I don’t miss special occasions, appointments, programs I want

I can take a power nap every day to refresh.

I am my own boss!
